As frustrating as this is your energy is better spent accepting that
strange formats are going to exist and you're just going to have to please
the customer. When I hear of this I think of the idate utility for
converting dates in a variety of formats back and forth.
Granted it would be nice if they did something that's easy to sort, like
yyyymmdd, so that, for efficiencies sake you could convert your real date
field to their numeric date field for comparisons. Now you may have to do
sorting and selecting based on converted dates. Which, we all know, kills
recommended keys and whatnot.
