given a chance to define the RAID sets the way I wanted to.

The only way to set up RAID sets "the way you want to" behind a
specific pair of adapters is to take the time to do it one set
at a time (or maybe 2 if you set partity optimization to
performance) and have only the drives plugged in that you want
to mess with.

This has always been the case.

The resource names of a bunch of our devices were renamed too.
I figured this had something to do with replacement of the
controller cards.

Going from older technology IOAs to the latest meant the drives
had to be T10 encoded. This rebuilt parity sets and more. But
wasn't it nice you didn't have to reload from tape during this
process?
