Subject: RE: What's the median age of the developers in your shop?
Thank you all for your responses. In an informal way you have confirmed
much of what we thought was happening in the field. To summarize for the
archives I received fourteen responses between 30 and 67. The Average was
46 years and the median is 50. That mirrors the other research I've seen.
Most shops are getting older while a few are getting younger. The indicator
is generally if the shop is adopting development strategies that include web
based/mobile development, then the shop is younger. Many of you replied
privately regarding specific things.
Adoption of the newer capabilities of RPG and RDI seem to be increasing as
well as the use of Java Script, HTML 5. There's a balance in this
self-reported group between .Net, PHP, and other web based languages.
Note these conclusions are not scientific rather they are anecdotal in
nature. You can discuss the meaning if you wish that discussion should now
switch to the non-tech group. Thank you all for your insights.
