IBM recommends that unprotected temp space (as displayed in DSPSYSSTS) not exceed 5% of DASD.

My understanding is that the only way to clear unprotected temp space is to IPL the system. This seems extreme.

In general I see systems creeping up on unprotected temp space or sometimes, exceeding it quickly (massive unresolved qry, bad Java pgmming, etc.).

What else causes unprotected temp space to grow and how can we avoid it from happening?

Thanks,

Jerry
