Are you using it as a "device" and not a "media library"?
On our system I can do a WRKMLBSTS and I see:
Device/
Resource Status
TAPGRT01 VARIED ON
TAP01 OPERATIONAL
TAP02 OPERATIONAL
TAP04 OPERATIONAL
TAP03 OPERATIONAL

(we have multiple drives in that library)

But if I do
WRKCFGSTS *DEV *TAP
I see:
Description Status
TAP01 VARIED OFF
TAP02 VARIED OFF
TAP03 VARIED OFF
TAP04 VARIED OFF

The difference is that these "devices" are special and only used for very
rare occasions, like an "alternate installation device". For example, to
install the OS during a full system restore.
The TAP01 under the TAPGRT01 is a "resource" and not a "device".
However the TAP01 device does show as a 3580-004 (we're LTO4, not 5).

What do you see with WRKHDWRSC *STG?
Resource Type-model Status Text
CMB04 6B25-001 Operational Storage Cont
DC04 6B25-001 Operational Storage Cont
TAPGRT01 3573-040 Operational Tape Library
9=Work with resource
Resource Type-model Status Text
TAPGRT01 3573-040 Operational Tape Library
TAP02 3580-004 Operational Tape Unit
TAP01 3580-004 Operational Tape Unit
TAP03 3580-004 Operational Tape Unit
TAP04 3580-004 Operational Tape Unit
