I thought you said it was zoned, not a substring of a character field.

I can't do this:

create table qtemp.t2 (
mychar char(5))

INSERT INTO QTEMP.T2 (MYCHAR) VALUES('0013}') with nc
1 rows inserted in T2 in QTEMP.

select cast(mychar as numeric(5, 2)) as myzone from qtemp.t2
This just displays those plus sign replacement characters.
