What I usually do is to use the OUTPUT(*OUTFILE) parameter in the SAV* commands. Then, after the command has run, I add the (out) file to a log file, copying only the most relevant fields including, of course, the sequence number.
That way I have a record of the object(s) saved, its sequence number, tape label, etc...
