I believe those are attribute bytes that do not display (as opposed to being
black.)
You may want to forego the window title completely and use the first line in
your window as the window title.

remains an issue, though. The spaces immediately to the left and right of
my text title still show as black, while the entire rest of the border is
green, and the text in the title is black on green (which is what I want).
Any way to get those two spaces of black to go away?
