We do to things here.

First, we have a CL program (it started out simple, but evolved) that checks the status of a number of our server jobs, and calls a modified HTTPAPI example RPGLE program that verifies that our web servers are actually serving pages, then emails out the results (thus checking the internet connection status). It's set up on a self-perpetuating batch job to run twice a day.

Second, when that proved to be inadequate to detect outages, we set up a free account with Site24x7.com, to monitor the status of the most important servers that are visible to the outside, and email us if there are any outages.
