Vern,
One benefit might be to audit "long term" save files and beat those into
submission who do not use the higher compression ratios. Sure, there's a
performance hit, but for long term, rarely accessed save files of a
considerable size, it's worth it.

SAVFs can be read record by record, and there might be something in the OIR of the object. Still, I am curious to know what the benefit of knowing this is.
