It's late, and I've missed most of my day due to a migraine, but, yes
there are things which can be done.
First of all you need to condition your read not to wait on the lock but
to error out.
Once you error out you need to read your job's joblog for the message. One
method of doing that on current versions of the OS is read the infocenter
and look for the joblog_info SQL IBM i service.
