Though I'm not sure what you mean by "I don't say Message Wait Status
because the job is not actually at Message Wait Status when you look at
the job using WRKACTJOB."

Sam,
I coded a simple divide by zero error in RPGLE. I ran that interactively.
Got the inquiry error message. Check WRKACTJOB, etc from another
display. The first job was NOT in MSGW. It was in DSPW, aka Display
Wait. Apparently, in an interactive job, they consider the display
waiting on input from someone to be Display Wait, irregardless if the
display is waiting on a DDS type input screen or an inquiry message.
This is why I checked for a job that was in a display wait and the job log
contained an inquiry message as it's last message in the joblog.
Technically you could write your input screen as a set of inquiry message
USR0001 Enter customer number, C to Cancel
USR0002 Enter item number, C to Cancel
...
Of course, I would expect such a system to be replaced with an entirely
different platform by the end of the month.
