I'll leave the 'open' argument over to people more familiar with open
systems. I believe it has something to do with the number of APIs from
the open systems foundation supported.

Most computer systems do pay some legacy to earlier systems. Windows to
DOS, IBM i to OS/400 and the list goes on.

There is a difference between an open system and systems that are open
source.
