You can certainly do this and I have many customers who do. The issue with many (most?) systems today is that 'random' IPLs to do PTFs would create havoc of the highest order. Backups are required (something the PC world flatly ignores at their peril) and it's just simple.

If it works in your shop that's great, set it up and rock and roll.

I do not have even one customer who wants IBM to even give them an option for automatic updates and IPLs!
