I use the /QNTC file system and the access() API (here's Scott Klements great tutorial on that API https://www.scottklement.com/rpg/ifs_ebook/ifs_ebook.html#ACCESS).

/QNTC does have some authentication requirements that some people take issue with.

What is an effective (and hoepfullY simple) way to check for a file on a windows network from the Ibm i?
