The correction (the program was locking up with a decimal data error in an alpha field overlaid with a zoned one) was to have it check for records with a field value that would lead to that DD error, and skip all processing on them.

Which is to say, it should have skipped exactly two records out of some 15 thousand.

Maybe there was something else competing for processor attention when I was running the uncorrected version.
