Yes. I've put together some skunkworks apps on my own, and one or two have actually sneaked into production. Officially, 5250 is the end-all, be-all. For anything else, I have to spoon-feed data to the "cool kids".

I wouldn't personally put Java in that same list, although I understand why someone would. As an RPG back end / 5250 programmer, for me to modernise / browserise my applications with PASE-based open source is a heavy list and a large sell.
That said, I can do some Very Cool Things with Java and RPG without having to resort to PASE at all. Back end things is all I do. That's a different sort of modernising. I am explicitly forbidden to browserise any IBM i applications. Web work belongs in the web silo, don't you know. :-(
