And "taking a ride on The Cycle" doesn't necessarily require one to use
-- or even understand -- the more esoteric features thereof: I write
Cycle programs with some regularity, and I've never used a "secondary
file," or even bothered to figure out how they work. Nor is there always
a primary file: modern interactive programming is full of event loops,
and The Cycle is a ready-made one: all you have to do is map your "shut
down and exit normally" event into LR.
If you code in RPG, you can USE The Cycle; you can bypass The Cycle, and
in the latest ILE versions, you can disable The Cycle and exclude its code.
The one thing you can NEVER do with The Cycle, if you are to code in
RPG, is ignore it.
At any rate, if you restrict yourself to only the features found in all
languages, then you may as well only have one language (and if you take
THAT to extremes, then the language will look an awful lot like Tiny
BASIC, or maybe Logo. And every problem in the world will "look like a
nail."
