I was looking at this just before lunch. After lunch, on a whim, I tried it again. Everything works. I guess it just took time for the change to replicate/refresh everywhere.

We have multiple internal domains. We're trying to migrate from .dekko-1 to .corp.dekko.com. Occasionally some end piece will only be in one or the other.
Could this be your situation?

I ran HOST without specifying a DNS server. I also used copy-and-paste to
protect against typos. Interesting, I have to use the fully-qualified
name, which I don't for anything else.
FWIW, here's the back story:
I had the printer in my office for setup. I then moved it to its final
home, which is a different DHCP subnet. At that point, nothing could see
the printer. I went to our network admin, and he did some voodoo. After
flushing the PC DNS, the printer answered a PING from his PC.
