Well, the workbook isn't going to open as-is directly in Notepad++ (or
any other text editor). Buck described how to go about extracting the
XML contents of the workbook, which could then be examined in
Notepad++ (or any other text editor; though frankly, for this purpose
there's not much advantage to using anything other than Notepad).

But it really shouldn't come to that. I mean, the Excel GUI is not
***THAT*** opaque. You should be able to figure out what the value is
from within Excel itself. But you have to know your way around
formatting.
