Don't use the table directly. Either go through a DDS logical with an
explicit format (column list) or an SQL index with an explicit column list.

All true. Somewhere though, some RPG program that uses RLA has an I/O
buffer burnt into the object code. And if I want to add a column to the
view or index, I will not be able to unless I can also recompile all the
programs which use that I/O buffer all at the same moment in time.

That environment does not exist with FETCH column, column, column.
