Find an app that needs developing.

Your church, clubs, family, dry cleaner, anyone, do they need a website? Make one.

Start a blog. Learn Wordpress.

Download WAMP and code an application to catalog your DVD collection.

Write some office 365 macros. Write powershell scripts in windows to automate something.

Install Linux on your pc. Get it to dual boot windows. Figure out how to get free VM software to let you have a windows 7 virtual machine. Heck I have a XP VM.

I started with my kids swim team. Did a wordpress website. Integrated to Facebook and twitter. We put all of the clubs info in the cloud. Accept paypal for registration. Lots of good stuff to learn.

You're 100% correct, in theory. It wouldn't work for me though, hence my hyperbolic statement.

If I did something like an Android app, I'd face death by firing squad.

Focus on business value. That's why .NET became so prevalent in RPG shops
- it provided a web front end in short order. Mobile can do the same if applied to areas that save the company money.
