One other quick consideration and that's processor speed. If all of your
applications are traditional IBM i workload it's not a concern, but add in
WAS or any of the Web serving components and Ghz becomes more important.
Again as Pete points out analysis is the key and knowing the workload, but
the differences between the 6 and 8 core systems aren't that much (there are
some PowerVM licenses and such to deal with) so if you have those mixed
workloads work with your business partner to get it right.

Agreed with Larry. Some additional information. Every situation needs to
be analyzed, as sometimes it is cheaper to stay on P20, with a 8286-42A and
not take the charge for the unlimited user licenses. Three cores on that P7
is probably 21,000 CPW, but a P8 he could have 2 cores and be at 20,000 CPW
with a 6 core, and probably 22,000 with an 8 core (and only 2 turned on).

As Larry said, the difference with the amount of memory you can have will
play a huge difference. Don't forget, throw some SSDs on the Production
partition and the machine will scream.

For a Power8 you could easily get that down a click from P20 to P10 tier and
into a 6 Core machine. Transfer the 3 IBM i Licenses and you'll have plenty
of zip.

Now you didn't say how much memory you need but the 6 and 8 Core Power8s
have a limit at 1T IIRC.

Now the P20 to P10 drop will lower your SWMA but you'll need to purchase IBM
i users as your P20 licenses while more expensive don't need users.

For Power9 you'll probably need 32 cores with 30 of them licensed for IBM i.
But that's just a SWAG. :-)

To quote Captain Yugi Nagata from the movie Battleship: "That's not what
it means. Not even close."

You almost NEVER need additional processors for such partitions. Since the
workload is often moved from a production partition it's just a move not
additional. In addition today's processors are so beefy that almost all
Power Systems machines have plenty of space processing power.

Memory, maybe but again since workload is often transferred this may be
movable as well. Then consider that memory costs have dropped so far so fast
that we configure 32 and 64 GB as a baseline these days. You can almost
always fit an 8G partition in there.

i5/OS hasn't been marketed for a decade and even IBM i Licenses are not
needed here. Unless you actually have to license another core you send the
IBM corporation *zero bucks.

Like Jim said in the first place it's mostly storage and a base partition
can be had in 70G no problemo so that's not likely a problem either.

I would have thought by now we would have gotten this point across!!

Never fails to happen. It's easy fast and as long as you have the

cheap.

Thanks Jim,

I have been debating on if we should to get one or not.

At THIS point it would be just a single LPAR. But the future, who knows.

I have proposed enough DASD (SSD drives and RAM) to make it possible.

Then there is a NEW CONSOLE in your very near future. I highly recommend
the HMC even if you only have one partition to start. Take my word for it,
it will come in handy, albeit a bit pricey.

One concern I would have is the HMC. IF you are using an HMC, there
is no version that will run both a power 5 and a power 8 or above.
The HMC running Version 7 will handle a power 5 through 7 but not the
power 8. An HMC running version 8 will not communicate with a power
5. :(

Just a heads up. My business partner totally missed that when sell me
new power 8's to replace old power 5's.

Well maybe a little. You won't be able to do a direct migration but
there are ways to get you on to the new box (at V7Rx) without too much
trouble.
That's where you might want to budget for some help. Those of us who do
this all the time see it as only a bit more complicated than a regular
unload/reload.

You might help yourself now by looking at QUSRSYS and QGPL and see what
"user objects" meaning anything you created are in there, since those two
libraries really provide the most intrigue to a migration like this. Move
as many of those objects (not including out queues etc) out of those
libraries to a library of your own making in the correct position in the
library list. That'll make the migration to V7Rx much easier.

Try this line:
If you're open to going to going to at least 7.2 they could save a few
thousand bucks with an S812 vs an S814.
Unless you just want to growth of the S814 instead (multi lpar capability
and more).

Of course your 525 won't support anything higher than 7.1
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=ssm1platformibmi
Then again, does any newer hardware support the tape drive you're using
on your 525? Like, how are you going to migrate from that?
BTW, just what tape drive are you using?

Well, 7.1 is a show stopper for the new S812. That requires 7.2 or 7.3,
and both with a new TR announced but not coming out until after our March
downtime.

It took me 2 years to finally get the upgrade from 5.4 to 7.1.
Nothing will be happening today....tomorrow.... or in the next couple of
months (or longer).

I know I will be asked how much life is left in the Power 8 before the
Power 9.

If I got the go ahead for the Power 8 today I do not think I would be
able

to contain my excitement.

Just trying to be prepared for the questions.

Thanks!!

Hi All,

Several months ago I put together a proposal to replace our i5 box
(9406-525) with a new shinny Power 8.

This proposal is going to be pushed again.

Does anyone know when the Power 9 box/config are going to be announced?
The config/pricing of a Power 9 will be different than the Power 8.

Thanks!!!!
