"If" you get it working, before you initialize the disk drives, do a
complete system save (As if you have a device to save it to...). Supported
devices vary by:
- Base model (like your 270)
- Cards in it to attach such a device to
- Version of the OS (V5R3, etc)
- PTF level of the OS as devices came out mid release may require certain
patches.

And, yes, rearranging the drives in the machine was a common technique
before sending the unit out for resale. Granted, not a very secure
technique...
