I tested using the '-' for continuation and it worked for me. 

     A          S SFUSERCR                          VALUES('This -
     A                                                      mean')   

Are you getting other errors in your compile that is preventing the
compiler from seeing the continuation correctly? 

(Note that my field is 10(a) so i did a truncated continuation, but it
should work for you and your longer field as well.)
