I solved this issue about 7 or so years ago for another employer and find myself trying to solve it again.

Steven, I wonder if you or your company might be interested in an open source project that I am getting ready to ship meant to deal with this issue?
The concept of iSeries Interface is to be send an XML, JASON or just text document to the iSeries in and be able to execute a program on the iSeries via one of three different methods.
1. PerformFunction through my Interface.
2. Call standard stored procedure that I have written 3. Call a custom stored procedure
Then be able to return the results.
It is meant to do exactly what you are trying to do. Send XML to the iSeries and execute a program to process it and return a result.
I have a Word document I could send to you that explains the product more if you are interested.
Product is open source and is free.
