One thing that comes to mind is are you possibly pining a device at that address but NOT that device?

Can you verify with the Arp Tables that the IP addresses match to the MAC addresses of the server and the HMC? The HMC will show you it's ARP table and ASMI will show you the MAC address of the interfaces I recall.
