Is a hardware HMC any different to a PC running a virtual HMC?
I'm trying to figure that out. Since we do a lot of PC virtualization I'm
really interested. And we have redundant virtualization environments so
if one is down I'm not toast.
I'm usually cautious in taking out just a snippet of a sentence but your
last one was the mother of all run on sentences. Let me work with this
snippet.
its also possible to do some "low level" maintenance/management stuff by
entering hex codes on the font panel? The HMC just makes it more
convenient/easier/remoteable?)
It's been over a decade since I've had a single lpar machine, and a few
hardware generations ago, so, no, I don't know if the front panel works
the same. I did have a recent issue in which I needed to access the front
panel. Basically resetting the IP address of the FSP itself due to
failure on my part in actually doing what IBM suggested without question.
You remember when front panel said things like
    01 B N
Which meant
    01 Show IPL mode
    B side
    N Normal (not manual) IPL
Well now you're more likely to see things like T and P instead of B and A.
Because T and P mean Temporary and Permanent sides of the rack firmware
and not B and A side of IBM i. But maybe it's different for a single lpar
shop.
Many people no longer even know how to get to the front panel. They've
now hid it into a slide out device. You have to push a button like you
want to pop out a diskette or CD and out pops the front panel. Front real
estate on smaller frame units is tight.
