yes, they do!!! getting some benefit, you usually would have to pay
something!!! You would get more flexible applications (sorting subfiles and
reports by any column, filtering subfiles and reports by any column), better
programmers performance (use wellknown programming style, under the cover
SQL is used). decouple applications from database with (nearly) no
programming effort. enable database redesign without changes in your
applications. stop riscy recompile orgies after minimal changes in your
database.
For vintage as400 installations this would be a problem and I would not
recommend to try to modernize applications, running on historical computers
(very similar to trying to run a windows UI on original XT Hardware).
Running on recent Hardware the additional needed CPU cycles would not be a
problem in nearly all cases.
