Richard, you and I are in "violent agreement" :)

I enjoy the open-source-under-PASE regimen, but as soon as you start
getting fancy, why wrestle with it there? I favor leveraging all this great
technology IBM has put at our fingertips on Power servers and set up a
Linux LPAR. Do the web magic there and slurp the data back and forth from
the i LPAR letting i do what i does best.

Along these lines, my Ublu <https://github.com/jwoehr/ublu> remote control
language for the i runs in a window if desired. Of course designed for me
and my users running from Linux/Mac/OpenBSD/Windows to robot IBM i. I tried
Ublu windowing mode via the X windowing system from IBM i a few weeks ago.
It took > 5 minutes for the window to come up ... Whee!

Or set up a Linux VM which takes a few minutes.

Also a possibility is to hook up the Linux server to the IBM i so you
don't need to necessarily deal with the oddities of things not working on
the i.

ACS runs fine on Linux as does Libreoffice if you need documentation tools
running on Linux.

And the best part for me is that .Net runs on Linux now as well !!

Nice idea to present this at COMMON as a class.

I think for IBM i folks who have not drunk the Open Source koolaid yet :)
the secret is to set up a PC with Linux at home and fiddle with this stuff.

If we are to use Open Source as IBM increasingly prescribes for IBM i, then
we have to get used to the environment and also the ethos of a community in
which all users are participants and are expected, in extremis, "to be able
to paddle their own canoe across the lagoon", as the Samoans say.

I have proposed a presentation on this subject for the spring COMMON.

Not all of us use SVN, nor do we know how to get to the source the way
you
do. We can use Google to get to javadocs - I've done that - Google is one
of my best friends!!

And if you want the change history of
