Thanks to everyone who contributed, commiserated, complained, and helped.
My curiosity is satisfied.
We will be keeping v7r3 as up to date with PTFs, TRs, etc. as possible.

Best Regards,

I went from 7.1 to 7.3 very soon after 7.3 was available. I found it
smooth and painless.

Used Download Director, which always has issues starting, between the
Java security prompts and who knows what else, but once it starts, it
ultimately (ie slowly) completes. Never had a corrupted file until I
forgot to use BINary mode in my FTP, whoops.

Used image catalogues; better than waiting for DVDs to stop buzzing.

I had no issues during the upgrade, although after it was up and running
I had a performance issue with DB2 due to having a bad IP in my TCP
configuration. DB2 kept trying to look up the client name (a new thing)
and would time out on that bad IP. Added 60 seconds to every query,
ouch. Fix that and wham, it's fast as it ever was. The DB2 team gave
excellent support.
