I'm also in a shop where the developers don't have authority to DSPPTF - that's why I mentioned using the data area, since I have never heard that someone with command line access is blocked from seeing the contents.

So DSPDTAARA QSS1MRI gives you the VRM - AND it gives you the language code - like 2924 on a US machine. The data area is, after all, giving you information about the MRI - machine-readable information.

And RCVDTAARA is all you need in a CL program - or a couple easy ways to get it in RPG.
