It's ok Jack, I often say this about myself even: No man is completely
worthless, they can always be used as a bad example.
Refresh my memory, did we already talk you through going into SST and
seeing if your tape device is flagged as an alternate installation device?
And can it also be used as an alternate IPL device?
Device type:
Model:
WRKHDWRSC *STG
Find your tape. You may have to use option 9 to expand various ones.
Resource Type-model Status Text
CMB10 6B25-001 Operational Storage Controller
  DC06 6B25-001 Operational Storage Controller
  KDVLVTL 3584-032 Operational Tape Library
Actually, I cannot find this flagged as an alternate IPL device. Luckily
I retain some really old documentation and I can find my IBM i 7.1
unload/reload when I upgraded from Power 6 to Power 8.
Ok, at that time I did an IPL from a 7.1 DVD. I had downloaded the latest
7.1 refresh and burned it to a DVD and put it in. That DVD is virtualized
by VIOS to IBM i so my operation was a little trickier than yours should
be.
At that time we were using a physical media library instead of a VTL. Keep
in mind, during the initial install it will treat your media library as a
tape device instead of a media library. So I had to manually move my
first tape into a drive. It can often be done from the front panel of the
tape library but I preferred the web gui. Here's a little snippet. I
literally had coworkers who are normally developers and manage to avoid
system admin stuff except for once a quarter doing this stuff based on my
instructions.
Also our media library had multiple drives. This is why you'll see stuff
pertaining to how important the serial numbers of the drives are.
Snippet:
On the HMC expand server Server-8286-42A-SN21443BV.
Put a check mark in front of the new partition.
Select Properties at the bottom.
On the settings tab make sure the IPL source is D and the Keylock position
is Manual.
Ok.
Operations, Activate, Profile. Click Advanced.
On Advanced ensure the keylock position is Manual and that the IPL Type is
D – IPL from the alternate load source (CD or tape) for install.

This will take a minute or two.
Record the drive you selected: ________________

3. Define alternate installation device
I’ve always gotten really lucky when I selected the first bus shown.
This will gather some information about that bus and it takes a minute.
Select 1. Tape
Match the serial number you recorded earlier. The last seven characters
are the significant ones. Do not rely upon the ‘resource name’. But
record that also ______________
Select that.
The message “Alternate installation device selected” should appear and an
asterisk will appear in the “Selected” column.
F3=Exit to return to the “Install Licensed Internal Code” screen.
Select “1. Install Licensed Internal Code”.
You have chosen to install the Licensed Internal Code
from the alternate installation device.
 Press Enter to continue.

2. Install Licensed Internal Code and Initialize system
Press F10 to continue the install.
Takes about 1.5 minutes to get to 100% screen. Then the little tease
stays on that screen for about 5 minutes. Then the screen goes blank. On
the HMC browser
session status codes will show some progress. It took me about 6 minutes
to get to the “Disk Configuration Attention Report”.

Well, you’ve now finished installing the LIC or Licensed Internal Code. If
someone else needs the DVD drive let them have it.
Before we start the restoration of the operating system we will add in the
disk drives. Since these are all already hosted disks we will not worry
about Raid protection. That was already set up on the host partition.
3. Use Dedicated Service Tools (DST)
Lock your capitals on.
Service tools user id is QSECOFR (all caps)
Password is QSECOFR (all caps)
It will make you change it right away. Change the password to PASSWORD.
13. Work with system security
These values should all be “1”. You may have to change “Allow a service
tool user ID…”.
After changing them to 1, press F3.
6. Select DST console mode
5. Work with DST environment
3. Service tools user IDs
2=Change password on QSECOFR. Change their system service tools password
to SQL400 (all caps). Change the “Set password to expired” to 2-No.
Remember, there is a difference between a system service user id and an
IBM i user id.
From the “Use Dedicated Service Tools (DST)” screen select
4. Work with disk units
1. Work with disk configuration
3. Work with ASP configuration
3. Add units to ASPs
3. Add units to existing ASPs
Add all drives shown to ASP 1.
You may get a “Problem Report” with “Unit possibly configured for Power PC
AS”. If so, “F10=Ignore problems and continue”.
Press Enter to confirm your choice for Add units. Since we’ve only
installed LIC I don’t think we need to worry about balancing data at this
point.

We’re now on step 3 of the BRMS reports but I have the steps documented
here.
WRKMLBSTS
Record the drive names which appear underneath TAPMLB01, like (TAP01,
TAP02,…)
________________________________________
Vary off TAPMLB01.
We want to get the serial numbers to match and get the right device names.
From the browser interface for TAPGRT01 we’ve determined these serial
numbers
Drive 1: 1068036401
Drive 2: 1068036390
Drive 3: 1068036381
Drive 4: 1068015419
WRKHDWRSC *STG
Find TAPMLB01.
9=Work with resource
For each TAP0x which appears record the device and use option 7 to
determine it’s serial number and record that.
TAP01 __________
TAP02 __________
TAP03 __________
TAP04 __________
STRSST
QSECOFR
SQL400
8. Work with service tools user IDs and Devices
3. Select console
Change Allow console recovery and console can be taken to 1 = Yes.
Enter, then F12 back to “System Service Tools (SST)”
1. Start a service tool
7. Hardware service manager
3. Locate resource by resource name
You can use this to rename the TAP0x devices to match serial numbers. If
two are flopped you may have to rename one to some temp name, rename the
other, rename back. You’ll figure it out.
“2=Change detail” is how you rename them.
On MAIL1 I had to change TAP02 to TAP04 and TAP03 to TAP02. Evidently
Port 3 on the switch was dead again.
Also change TAPMLB01 to TAPGRT01.
When you’re done you should have
TAPGRT01, not TAPMLB01
And these serial numbers should match
TAP01: 00-8036401
TAP02: 00-8036390
TAP03: 00-8036381
TAP04: 00-8015419
Record the new name matching the serial you used to restore the LIC
____________
Press F3 to exit SST back to the command line.
Now we need to change the device descriptions to match their hardware
resource names.
WRKDEVD TAP*
5 to display each device, then use option 7 to rename it to match it’s
hardware resource name.
WRKMLBSTS
Vary on TAPGRT01.
