I'll pass along an update for anyone who may be interested in this. I was
able to set up a 2nd LPAR by using Virtual Partition Manager, and set up a
LAN console via ACS. In the future I may document this further because IBM
technical notes didn't answer all my questions. I still don't quite get the
part about virtual ethernet. But I was able to get a LAN console connected
that way. I'll continue to investigate that.

Gotchas, not really. The article does gloss over the importance of the
network server descriptions being set up properly. If you ask Larry and
me, we will both create at least two NWSD. One the handles nothing but the
network server storage and one that sets up tape/DVD.

CRTNWSD NWSD(BARNEYP) RSRCNAME(CTL07) TYPE(*GUEST +

SHUTDTIMO(31) PARTITION(*NONE) PTNNBR(3) +
CODEPAGE(437) MSGQ(*JOBLOG) +

The key is the RSTDDEVRSC parameter. BARNEY1 does not allow tape/DVD,
BARNEYP does.

Then your image catalog can be used for loading the OS, LPP, and PTFs etc.

Make sure you set the storage up right. If this is a test/dev/playground,
then set it up with whatever storage you need, but use at least 40GB drives
when you create them to keep them over the 35GB lower limit. if this is a
production partition in any way, make sure there are at least 6 disk units.

Also note that I used shared storage pools to run these in to keep them out
of *BASE.
