I wouldn't send someone to COMMON or some such thing until they know what
they don't know.

Depending on the job requirements, I would definitely consider using the
resources of technical conferences like COMMON's POWERUp and those of
local
user groups (NEUCG, WMCPA and OCEAN come to mind) to supplement any
other
resources.
