Any USB will work. It might have to be formatted by and IBM system,
although with P9 I have not checked. It uses a UDF that makes it look like
an optical device (found under /QOPT) when you use it.

After it's formatted any PC can read/write to it.

Yes, exactly that. Doesn't appear to be anything special about it. Model
GP70N from Hitachi-LG Portable DVD drive. Complete with an IBM Power
Systems sticker on it!
