Paul Harvey left several thoughts on my mind over the yeara. I think the
one I remember best si "Not all that we call progress is progress". Seems
like that concept has been forgotten. I had a job 40 some years ago where
correction entries were performed via keypunch. The people who wrote the
code did not work with the keypunch design. One field contained a left
justified numeric field. So, couldn't use the limited capability of the
keypunch on that one field. Doesn't take any time at all to learn just how
quickly a card was now trash. If the people who wrote the code had
actually had to enter some data, they might have redesigned the process..
I remember hearing the best way to become a god programmer (at that time)
was to start as a computer operator. Really helps to understand the entire
process.

I can attest to a similar scenario. Where I work I started in freight bill
entry, and driver check in. We used a DOS based product for freight bill
entry which drove Attachmate sessions to enter the freight bills into our
mainframe. I worked at our second largest terminal, and the minimum
requirement there to work in freight bill entry was to be able to enter
fifty freight bills an hour. One can't do that when frequently reaching
for
a mouse. After I moved into mainframe operations the company downgraded to
a Windows based freight bill entry program which FTP'd files of freight
bills to our mainframe. I never saw the user interface for the Windows
version, but heard from the billing supervisor I used to work under that it
slowed things down considerably. Thankfully with the AS/400 based system

recently migrated to freight bill entry is 5250 based.
