Ah, I was probably thinking of Oracle. We have an Oracle database for
Web purposes that I occasionally interact with.

Anyway, Matt and Charles, it seems the issue might be related to
commit level after all. Still testing, but looks promising.

Y'know, I'm actually used to commit level issues; they come up
frequently in my programs, and it's usually obvious that I have to
change my connection settings accordingly. What is unsettling here is
that the existing application, which is in production right now and
has been for years, works with the "naive" commit setting.
