One of the big reasons for going to a Power 9 was the three year warranty. 
 Methinks you would lose that with a used machine.
That being said I feel like we got 2 Hershey bars and a Coke trade in 
value for our Power 8's so maybe the used market is a deal  (at least to 
the middlemen).
We used to have two 8286-41A and one 8286-42A.  It had something to do 
with expandability.  Something about a split back plane and internal dasd 
configuration.  The 42A was our main production box.  However all of them 
had at least 5 lpars of IBM i and two lpars of vios each.  Two of them 
also had a lpar of AIX.
The only internal dasd we used was one mirrored drive for each vios lpar. 
The dasd for the hosting lpar of IBM i went into expansion units.
But a BP should be able to answer that better.
