If I could attach a screenshot I could show more of what I looks like on the 5250 screen. But in the example I showed in the original post you basically see a green box where the x'31' and x'09' are.
Changing to a web interface would not be on the table. The admins for the app are just wondering why if it displays OK in the Unix app (SAP I think) why it doesn't display OK on the i system.

The "extra character" makes me think they are double byte characters.
Does 5250 even display double byte characters?
