We have used Expect with sFTP (thanks ScottK) successfully.

Now we are using python to run our sFTP scripts and within python we are 
using pexpect which gives us much more control as compared with running 
expect out of a shell script.  python gets to monitor every response 
(that we can anticipate) from the sFTP server.  We have much better control.

Plus.  Python can issue SQL requests into the DB2 side of the work to 
validate data (yes we are doing some of that).

We also learned to capture stderror in case our python script crashed 
(unexpectedly of course).

pexpect is available via PIP.
