Just to follow up on my own post.

The easiest syntax on the Mac is apparently:

open 'smb://username:password@server/share'
Which automatically creates a load point etc.

Sadly all I get is an error saying the share does not exist ... but at least it connects so that part is working. Now I just have to find out how to establish the /share part on the iBM i - thought I'd done that but ...

Is there a command to show what shares are active on the system?

Been using it for years Richard, but nice as it is that is what I'm trying to get away from.

The sequence run program, ftp IFS file to local drive, open local copy, rinse and repeat gets tedious after a while!

None of it Rob - but since I need to issue the mount on the Mac the nice pretty IBM i command doesn't help a lot. It has to be "translated" - I finally found an example on the web that actually identified which part was the server name. Tried it - still can't get it to work.

I've wasted way too much time on this so for now I'm just giving up.

Thanks to all for the help.
