I thought I knew what UID meant - but apparently not as I have no clue what you mean or how to check it.

As to GID (Group Id?) I also have no idea how that would be assigned or checked.

Not getting at you Paul - but as a general point re questions like this one - if I understood Unixese (or the Linuxese dialect) I probably wouldn't be needing to ask how to do this.

from previous experience (not Mac), NFS does not use user id and

Thanks Scott - I'll check it out.

Thanks to some help from Bryan I did finally get NFS to work yesterday but
frankly I had tweaked so many bits and pieces by the time I finished that
I'm less than certain what the final "cure" was. I _think_ it was setting
my user profile as the one to use for the share. All the error messages
were indicating security issues and although I had set the share to use
system authentication it was never prompting for usr Id and pw.

Hopefully this will be a smoother and easier path.

Hey Jon,

If you're open to alternatives, you might consider using SSHFS. This
lets you mount the IFS on your Mac (its available for Windows, Linux, etc
too) using the SSH server that runs on IBM i. In my experience this is
much more stable than using SMB/CIFS (i.e. Windows Networking) and a lot
more secure than using NFS (which really should only be used in a
controlled environment such as a VPN or secured LAN)

SSHFS works really well, and uses the underlying cryptography and
security of SSH.

I found this tutorial with a quick Google. Check it out!

Got it.

Wasn?t sure if you were running a MacOS version that would support
RDI.

I saw a couple related samba issues for older versions of MacOs.

Without access to your IBMi machine to try it, it?s hard to say what
might be causing the issues.

Your version of MacOs definitely matches mine.
Have you tried it with your wife?s Mac or doesn?t she let you touch it
? ?

Richard,

I'm running the latest incarnation of High Sierra (10.13.6)

Going to update to the latest version but waiting a few weeks more ...

I do use RDi and I do compile from it. But it has really no relevance
to the question at hand as not all the files I want to access original
from RDi developed code.

I am generating Excel spreadsheets (at the moment) and want a mapped
drive to avoid having to copy the files. I could add Excel as an external
app in RDi but I'm looking for a solution that won't force me to do that
for every file type that I generate on the IBM i now and in the future.

Does that answer your questions?

I don't know if I ever saw info on what Mac OS version are you running
?

Even if your machine is 8yrs old it should run a newer version of
MacOS.

I was testing from a 2011 Macbook Air.

You also never answered the RDI question. Why not use RDI if you're
doing IBM i compiling ?

I know it _should_ Scott. But it doesn't work.

I get the errors noted previously. It is very odd because it appears
to partially work (i.e. it will seek authentication etc.) but then fails
with a message indicating that the connection type is not accepted at all.
