It's not clear to me whether IBM i supports it or not.

site listfmt 1

in the "Post login commands"?

I don't *think* that is the same thing as "supporting MLSD", but it's
conceivable to me that making the listing more like a Unix listing
might nudge LIST into working correctly.

To be clear (particularly to onlookers who haven't read or can't
remember the whole thread), I think SFTP is the better way to go
whenever it's available. (Or other SSH-using tools. SSHFS has been
mentioned, and I do recommend this.) Fortunately we've already
established that SFTP works for you. The continuing conversation about
FTP is partly academic curiosity, and partly for helping those who,
for whatever reason, might really need to connect via FTP.
