Jim,

E1JD backplane,

I forgot to mention, 1 ESLS - EXP24SX with 24 ESHM - 1.86 TB Mainstream SAS 4k SFF-2 SSD for IBM i

No DASD in CEC at this time, possibly for future growth.

I used the references from this doc.

https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/9223-42H/p9eab/p9eab_914_924_slot_details.htm

Table 4. PCIe adapter slot priorities and maximum adapters supported in the 9009-41A, 9009-42A, or 9223-42H

I took the top priorities for each feature, which led to the ones given.

I started with the EJ14, which I felt was most important.

EJ14 PCIe3 12 GB Cache RAID PLUS SAS adapter quad-port 6 Gb x8 (FC EJ14; CCIN 57B1); Adapter part number 01DH742 8, 9, 5, 10, 6, 12,

Followed by EN0A

EN0A PCIe3 16 Gb 2-port Fibre Channel adapter (FC EL43, EL5B, EN0A, and EN0B; CCIN 577F); Adapter part number: 00E3496 8, 9, 5, 10, 6, 12, 7

Lastly 5899

5899 PCIe2 4-port 1 GbE adapter (FC 5260, 5899, EL4L, and EL4M; CCIN 576F); Adapter part number: 74Y4064 11, 5, 10, 12, 6,7,8,9

I think I'm good.

Paul

Definition in terms time, I used expansion chassis when I should have said

Disk expansion chassis (EXP24)

That's the only reason for the EJ14s that I am aware of.

Which backplane did you use?

EJ1C

EJ1C + EJ1E

EJ1D

EJ1M

For our discussion I'll assume EJ1D. (18 SFF-3 bays with write cache)

First off IBM will always put a 5899 in slot C11. Leave it there, no reason

to move it.

P1-C5 x8 2.5 GHz Long EN0A PCIe3 16Gb 2-port Fibre Channel

Adapter

P1-C6 x16 2.5 GHz Long 5899 PCIe2 4-port 1GbE Adapter

P1-C7 x8 2.5 GHz Long 5899 PCIe2 4-port 1GbE Adapter

P1-C8 x16 2.5 GHz Long EJ14 PCIe3 12GB Cache RAID PLUS SAS

Adapter Quad-port 6Gb x8

P1-C9 x16 2.5 GHz Long EJ14 [P1-C8] PCIe3 12GB Cache RAID PLUS

SAS Adapter Quad-port 6Gb x8

P1-C10 x8 2.5 GHz Long EN0A PCIe3 16Gb 2-port Fibre Channel

Adapter

P1-C11 x8 2.5 GHz Long 5899 PCIe2 4-port 1GbE Adapter

Now the only argument I have is I would move the EN0A 16GB Fibre card to

P1-C6 and the 5899 to C5. Maybe a bit picky but it's my thought.

So the system planner says all is good with those placements, in fact says

slots will be under utilized.

Now all I would need are the partition definitions, ViSCSI assignments, etc

to finish the system plan.

Once that is done and the HMC is connected to the system, you would just

deploy the system plan from the sysetm planning software and whahoo, you

have a fully configured system.

Auditors love the system plan since it documents the entire box quite well.

So that took about 3 minutes to build, about four times that long to write

the email.

Now you have a validated system.

Jim,

Made some adjustments, only 7 cards total, all in the CEC, no expansion

bays.

P1-C8 - EJ14 - PCIe3 12GB Cache RAID PLUS SAS Adapter Quad-port 6Gb x8

(generation 3, x8, single-wide, full-height, short form-factor)

P1-C9 - EJ14 - PCIe3 12GB Cache RAID PLUS SAS Adapter Quad-port 6Gb x8

(generation 3, x8, single-wide, full-height, short form-factor)

P1-C5 - EN0A - PCIe3 16Gb 2-port Fibre Channel Adapter (low-profile, x8,

generation 3, PCIe adapter. This adapter is a high-performance 8x short form

adapter)

P1-C10 -EN0A - PCIe3 16Gb 2-port Fibre Channel Adapter (low-profile, x8,

generation 3, PCIe adapter. This adapter is a high-performance 8x short form

adapter)

P1-C6 - 5899 - PCIe2 4-port 1GbE Adapter (short, low-profile, generation-2

PCIe adapter)

P1-C7 - 5899 - PCIe2 4-port 1GbE Adapter (short, low-profile, generation-2

PCIe adapter)

P1-C8 - 5899 - PCIe2 4-port 1GbE Adapter (short, low-profile, generation-2

PCIe adapter)

Paul:

The FIRST place you start with that project is the system planning tool.

See:

https://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=isg3T1026099

You'll have to install it and build your system. In there you can see all

the placement rules etc.

When folks like Larry, me, Pete design systems this is where we start.

If you have the system and the HMC already up and powered on you could

extract the system plan from the HMC and use that to figure out placements

for the new cards.

The EJ14s and the EN0As will need to be in specific slots more because of

performance that slot restrictions. The planning tool will show you cards

that are in poor locations for that card.

Your business partner should have created a system plan prior to ordering

the system. Ask them for that copy.

Failing all of that I could build one for you.

How many expansion chassis?

How many partitions? VIOS/IBM i hosting i?

Etc. etc.
