Stop fixating on size (absolutely no pun intended).
Let's compromise. Look at it this way

Eleven years ago a model would have taken one $999 disk drive for hot
spare for a 15k spinning disk.
Now a model would take one $720 disk drive for hot spare for a 15k
spinning disk. The fact that it's four times the size is just gravy.
