Sounds like it might just be easier to create a new partition and load
7.1 on it.
Is that easier (using catalog image)

John,

I think Larry already pointed this out but you cannot use an image
catalog on the partition you need to work on.

You'll need to set this up on one of your other systems and use the
NFS method or physical media. Google network install for IBM i and
you'll find the documentation on it.

Then, when you get to that HMC command that kicks off the whole thing
let us know. Larry has a template to build that command, which is
well, cryptic if you don't understand the name/value pair parameters
of the HMC.

Larry,

OK, I have downloaded the latest version of 7.1 from the IBM site.

It is now stored in a Image Catalog on Virtual Partition #2

I want to install this 7.1 onto an existing Virtual Partition #2
currently running 7.2

I have two questions

Question #1
When I run the "verify catalog" it fails with:
Message ID . . . . . . : CPDBC1E Severity . . . . . . . :
30

Message type . . . . . : Diagnostic

Date sent . . . . . . : 12/20/18 Time sent . . . . . . :

Message . . . . : Verification of image catalog V7R1M0 failed with
reason
code 3.

Cause . . . . . : Verification for image catalog V7R1M0 type
*UPGRADE failed
with reason code 3. The reason codes and their meanings are as
follows:
01 - The load source disk unit must have at least 2000 megabytes
(MB)
of free storage space to install from an image catalog (virtual
device).

02 - Installation of the release requires additional allocation of
space for Licensed Internal Code.

03 - The Licensed Internal code media is not supported for
installation over the current version, release, and modification
that
is installed.

What am I missing

Question #2
How do I get the partition #2 to IPL from the Image Catalog?

Thanks

John

You have no choice here but to boot an i 7.1 LIC optical media or
tape.
Of course it needs to be sufficiently new to run on POWER8. If you
download from IBM it will be new enough. If you have a tape that
contains SAVSYS from your POWER8 you can use that.

You will get an error that says 'Cannot install LIC over the current

LIC'. (Option 2 in on the install menu) This is because your only
choice is to completely scratch the partition and install new i 7.1
LIC since the system is currently at a higher level LIC. Once that's

installed you will add disks, and install the operating system.

No need to ask why I need to do this, trust me I need to do this.

I have a Power 8 with 4 partitions.

All partitions are currently running 7.2

Currently in the process of updating one partition to 7.3

Want to update one partition back to 7.1 (not even sure if this is
called update? rollback? downgrade?)

At one point in the past I had CD's for 7.1 but can't find them
now.

I am under SWMA so I can get 7.1 from IBM (download from IBM web
site,
can't find a way to order 7.1 CD's).

My question is: What is the easiest way for me to install 7.1 on
one

of the partitions running 7.2?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or advice

John
