I wouldn't be so quick to blame the PC guys. I don't think they
actively did anything to create those associations. At most, their
"crime" was installing the Adobe stuff and not actively
preventing/nullifying Adobe's associations.

It's the same as if you had some third-party software which just so
happens to use .doc as its natural file extension, yet you also have
MS Word installed on your system. You can bet Word is going to claim
.doc for itself.
