This is what we are doing. It works great. With multiple drives in the library I can back up multiple lpars simultaneously. No varying on/off. No dynamic lpar needed. Just works great.
However we are using internal disk and hosting internal disk with VIOS is a huge performance killer so the only thing we are using VIOS for is tape and Ethernet. Ethernet has improved where you can host that from i but what we have works so we leave it alone. This leaves just tape libraries as a reason for VIOS. Many people do not want the complexity of dealing with VIOS. The upgrades, etc.

Then again, a VTL all but solves the problem since they can emulate multiple libraries on a single device. All that holds that up is the attachment card on the POWER system.
