The cost of maintenance is indeed higher, because the MBTF is rather fixed. But then again, so is the MTBF for spinning rust.
In our case, SSDs are worth it. Me and Calvin use two E4Bs to build and develop Mono on i, one machine running on spinning rust and one on all-flash. The performance improvements are in the double digits, and power consumption is significantly lower as well, lowering my TCO. Depending on your workloads, it might also make sense to eg upgrade a P8 to SSDs instead of to a P9.
As Holger said though, SANs are the way to go, especially if you’ve got more than one box.

Subject: SSD's
I got another newsletter this week from a company specializing in upgrades and new systems. It had the usual article spouting how SSD's and/or flash is the here and now and HDD's are a thing of the past. All well and good. However not mentioning that the cost of maintenance of SSD's is astronomical after they go out of warranty is disrespectful of customers who do not replace their systems every 3 years. While HDD's are often included in the system maintenance SSD's are not.
Do these companies have a vested interest in ensuring that customers upgrade every 3 years? By not mentioning this maintenance it makes them look like they are trying to sneak one past you.
I wonder what a comparison of a 5 or 7 year cost of ownership of a P9 loaded with HDDs vs the same loaded with SSD's would look like?
